Asia's Resurgence and America's Role 2014 APCAC Spring Summit, March 19-21, 2014 - New World Hotel

In the APCAC 2014 Summit, a yearly conference attended by executives worldwide tackling various business and economic  issues, the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Philip S. Goldberg discussed well the U.S. economic relationship with Asia.  He said that the American business community has a role to play in advancing the shared economic interests on ASEAN and throughout Asia. He added that the U.S. ought to remain engaged in supporting the efforts of the ASEAN and other bodies in promoting more economic policies that will stimulate economic growth and enable more people to experience the The 1st day of the summit was allotted to the registration of participants, while the next two days marked the conference proper. The well-prepared presentations were delivered by experts from top industries who gave updates in their respective fields, and some U.S. government officials on the state of U.S. trade and investment in their particular host countries.

Furthermore, he said that the Philippine economy grew by over seven percent last year, the second-highest rate of growth in the region.  With similar growth in 2012, he also mentioned that the country is on an economic upswing, from the 1960s; and thus, experiencing its greatest economic surge.

The keynote speaker, DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario enjoins APCAC and AmCham to fully support our independent and principled Foreign Policy and encourages deliberations on it, as well.  He hopes that the issue about China be resolved in no time, because the tension in South China Sea can adversely affect the economic and business scenario of the whole Asia-Pacific region.

He likewise enjoins the Chambers to fully support the Philippine Government's goals on inclusive growth, combating corruption, promoting transparency and peace, and upholding the rule of law.

In addition, he enjoins the Chambers to investing more and to continue doing business with the Philippines, since we consider them as valued friends, partners and allies, and not just business associates.

We look forward to APCAC 2015 Summit, for a stronger U.S.-Asia partnership!

Asian LP Gas Summit 2014

Co-organized by the Partnership for Clean Air (PCA), and supported by the LPG Industry Association (LPGIA) of the Philippines and the World LP Gas Association (WLPGA) the recently-organized Asian LP Gas Summit 2014 aims to help shape the future of the LP growth in Asia.

The three-day event commenced at the  ISLA LPG Calamba Refilling Plant, host for the site tour of pre-registered participants.  An LP Gas Best Practices Workshop was also conducted during the 1st day of the event.  And later in the evening, the attendees were treated to a sumptuous, welcome dinner.

Day 2 marked the ALPGS Exhibition Opening at the designated area, with foreign and local exhibitors, which was held simultaneously with the conference programme.

Noteworthy was the opening address of Director David Tyler of the World LP Gas Association, 'LPGas Usage in Asia - Sustainable Development in LP Gas Growth'. He mentioned the WLPGA's 5-year global campaign to reduce death and illness caused by traditional cooking fuels, used by millions worldwide. He also indicated that the transition from solid, fuel and kerosene to LPG Gas generates benefits in health, environment, economic and social areas.

And as as discussed by the LPG Association President Carlos Corpuz, who is also the President and CEO of Petronas Energy Philippines, Inc., fuelwood is still the primary cooking fuel used by most Filipino households. Kerosene is also widely used, but the majority of women, especially in developing countries prefer LPG gas over kerosene; because LPG gas is clean and convenient to use with no indoor pollution.  He added that compared with LPG gas, kerosene is hazardous to store and handle.

In 2001, the Asian Development Bank, World Bank and USAID established the Clean Air Asia, which has been operating since 2007, as an independent non-profit organization.  Its mission is to promote better air quality and livable cities by translating knowledge to policies and actions that reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from transport, energy and other sectors. It is hoped by Clean Air Asia that the adoption of tighter standards for cleaner fuels and vehicles by Asian countries be facilitated.

Today, the big challenge we all face is to hearten the national governments in accelerating adoption of new policies, effectively implementing existing rules, and scaling up proven solutions to Asia’s 1,000 cities. Let's us do our share!

' War and Peace' Book Launch and 'Lantaka' Exhibit @ the National Museum

Eager guests during the book launch and exhibit

Scholars William Alain Miailhe De Burgh, Fe B. Mangahas and Regalado Trota Jose offer new insights on their two-volume publication Of War and Peace: Lantakas and Bells in Search for Foundries in the Philippines.

Mrs. de Burgh and family

A remarkable result of their studies reveal how objects used in seemingly incongruent contexts - in war and peace - potentially have similar, if not entwined production technologies as illustrated by the melting and conversion of church bells into 'lantakas' in times of war.

The exhibition covers the primary studies on lantakas and bells that enrich our understanding of the cultural heritage of the Philippines.

Their research involved a comprehensive examination of the diversity of lantakas from three of the largest lantaka collections: the Miailhe de Burgh, the Brunei Bedil Collection and the National Museum Collection.
